Doc Phoenix 1

  1. DOC PHOENIX 1 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the paperback, "WEIRD HEROES Vol.2" as "Doc Phoenix" by Ted White.

When I did this drawing I was thinking of "Steve Holland" the man who posed as "Doc Savage" for all those paperback covers painted by James Bama in the 1960s. He also posed for many other pb cover artists, as Robert E. Howard's, "King Kull" and "Solomon Kane," as well as for other pb series characters like, "The Avenger," "Mike Hammer," and "Shell Scott". He was the perfect model for all those handsome, lean but muscular heroic characters.

But he did much more with his life than just pose for artists, he was also an actor; he played the role of "Flash Gordon" in the 1950s TV series, and he appeared on the Broadway stage in "Mr. Roberts" with Tyrone Power, and was part of the cast in "South Pacific" for two years.

Still, he is best remembered for appearing on all those paperback covers as "Doc Savage" in a torn shirt, with exposed chest and arm muscles. Whenever I see one of those Pb covers I think of it as a portrait of Steve Holland, before I look up and see the large lettering "Doc Savage".

I put the spirit of Steve Holland in this drawing; the spirit of adventure. He was born in 1925 and died in 1997.
